Bench Tree Announces The Launch of Their Gamma-ST Module

Bench Tree is excited to announce the launch of their Gamma-ST module, now available throughout the globe. The 175°C gamma solution offers customers dependable gamma measurements at a new low price.

Through the use of Bench Tree’s PCBA design and manufacturing process, the Gamma module can extend battery life downhole and increase reliability. Temperature- and vibration-induced counts are a thing of the past when utilizing the
Bench Tree Gamma module.

The 15.40-in. chassis is designed as a drop-in replacement for all standard MWD systems. When run with Bench Tree’s 3D-I module and m+ Pulser, it can be configured into a short String MWD system, with all electronics housed in one pressure barrel, eliminating the need for multiple field-mated connectors.

Price Mathieson recently joined Bench Tree as a Project Manager.

Price began his oilfield career in 2005 after completing his Petroleum Engineering degree from the University of Texas. He later received an Executive MBA and a master's degree in finance from Tulane University.

Price started working in the field for Leam Drilling Systems and served in various roles including R&M
Manager, Director of MWD, VP Technology, and Chief Technology Officer, overseeing the operation and development of downhole MWD tools.

When asked what he enjoy most about the MWD Industry, he said, "It’s both extremely fun and incredibly challenging. Nowhere else do you get to design these complex tools and then push them to the edge of what they are capable of surviving. There is a ton of effort that goes on behind the scenes and it is satisfying when you release a product that succeeds in these incredibly harsh conditions and helps customers push the boundaries."

Bench Tree’s Short MWD system provides operators with precise and dependable directional information to maximize drilling efficiency and payzone exposure.

Its reduced length and weight make it easier to handle than other systems, while helping solve reliability and accuracy issues inherent with longer legacy systems.

The system’s high-speed mud pulse transmission allows users to leave the legacy platform and reduce the need for expensive EM and dual-telemetry systems with limited depth capability. Reliability is improved by eliminating many of the failure points found in other systems.

For instance, the 3D-I, m+ Pulser and gamma all fit in one standard directional module pressure housing. The system also has 95% fewer field-mated connectors and less wiring than legacy systems.

- I have more than 15 years of Oil and Gas experience, which includes repair and maintenance, management, quality control/quality assurance, and root cause failure analysis roles.

What are you most proud of during your time with Bench Tree?
- I was part of a team that helped develop, write, produce, edit, and incorporate new repair and maintenance procedures, training videos, and reference guides. These procedures, videos, and reference guides have helped our clients and shop personnel become more knowledgeable on Bench Tree tools. This has made me feel extremely proud!

- Though Bench Tree has grown from a three-car garage into a large 38,000 sq ft building, I can still meet with the engineering team in their offices and not waste time on emails going back and forth all day.

- I have been on some part of the MWD manufacturing, repair, and calibration processes since 1997, so I have knowledge in multiple areas to help in every dept we have.

What are you most proud of during your time with Bench Tree?

Billy Wolf is currently a Manufacturing Engineer and Repair Tech with more than eight years with the Company.

Billy helps ensure that regular improvements are made within our manufacturing processes and oversees the Calibration Lab. As a repair tech, he's part of the team responsible for intaking, testing, and shipping downhole equipment.

Prior to coming to Bench Tree, he worked in a number of industries and manufacturing environments. This experience helps him look at situations from different angles and can think outside the box when assessing problems or improving processes.

Meet Riaz Minai, a member of our technical services team.

How long have you been at Bench Tree & what do you do?

- I've been here for 13 years. In my Technical Services role, I answer customer questions and trouble shoot/resolve their issues, 24/7.

What is the key to providing effective technical support?

- It's imparting an understanding of the topic at hand. People should come away from the conversation without any doubts or confusion, and their time is precious, so they appreciate brevity. I try to deliver this, every time.

What makes you effective in your role?

- My computer science and biochemistry background have helped. I used to work in a lab, which is a highly disciplined, methodical, & controlled environment. Developing software gave me the logical and programmatic side of things.

What are you most proud of during your time with us?

- O&G technologies generate a plethora of data, and when there's a failure, it can be overwhelming to evaluate that data. I help customers corral their logs, sift through them, spot correlations, and consolidate it all into a cohesive narrative in a report. It's very rewarding and I take pride in each report.

We’re excited to announce that Bench Tree Group LLC has entered into an exclusive product representation and distribution agreement with Sichuan Longmaxi Energy Tech Co, Ltd.

With this agreement, Longmaxi is the only certified representative to distribute and service Bench Tree’s MWD/LWD products in China. Longmaxi and its team has been invaluable to the growth of Bench Tree’s product line in the Chinese market.

Bench Tree’s MWD and Integrated HPR resistivity tools have been running successfully in extreme hot-hole wells, where others have not been able to succeed.

Case Study: Bench Tree’s Advanced Detection Firmware Decreases Downtime By Allowing Real-Time Surface Data to Be Received in Seconds, Not Hours

Decoding mud pulses in laterals, especially when agitators are used in the deeper formations, can be a challenge. A directional drilling service provider needed to offer real-time surface data analysis capabilities to operators to minimize downtime associated with pulling the BHA out of the hole to read recorded data.

The client partnered with Bench Tree to enhance MWD/LWD decoding capabilities to ensure that optimal real-time drilling decisions could be made at the surface.

Bench Tree evaluated the challenges that were being faced in the field and worked with the client to rewrite the advanced detection firmware to accommodate specific needs, ensuring pulses in deep, long laterals could be decoded at the surface in a matter of seconds.

With the new system deployed, the customer was able to download recorded data in as little as 90 seconds—a process that previously took 90 minutes to two hours with other systems. By sharply enhancing the speed of MWD/LWD data analysis, the customer was able to reduce NPT and saw significant cost savings globally.

Helping Customer Drill First Well in Harsh Latin American Environment

A leading provider of technologies and differentiated services was contracted to help an operator drill an exploratory well in a harsh environment in Latin America. To ensure they would complete the well within the time frame and in the sweet spot, they needed a robust all-in-one formation evaluation tool that would record the most accurate gamma ray, resistivity, and survey measurements possible.

The customer partnered with the Bench Tree team because of their outstanding record of providing technologies with reliable, accurate data. They used Bench Tree’s 4 ¾-in HPR Integrated MWD/LWD system, which combines the high-precision resistivity and short string measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools, while optimizing the bottomhole assembly to 48 feet for the collar, base tool, and battery sub.

The well, which was the first completed in this area, was drilled in 28 days and seven runs, despite harsh environmental conditions. The data from Bench Tree’s HPR Integrated solution allowed all parties to receive the necessary information at the surface quickly so appropriate real-time decisions could be made.

There will be a reception follow at the VFW Hall in Temple. 3302 Airport Road Temple, TX Brief outline of Bob’s professional life Bob was raised and attended High School in the community of Harrisburg in Houston. He was attending Rice University when he left school to serve in the US Navy. After the Navy, Bob attended the University of Texas and worked for Electro Mechanics Company (EMCO) in Austin. Bob was among a group that left EMCO to form Tensor and Magrange in 1975. These companies were sold to Allied Signal (Honeywell) and to General Electric from which he retired in 2008. Bob always worked with very talented teams that were responsible for equipment leading instruments and systems used in the mining, oil and gas drilling, and river crossing industries.

Throughout his career, Bob was involved in various technology projects ranging from classified defense projects, nuclear testing in the Pacific and numerous patents that resulted in core products that are still the backbone of products being used in the petroleum industry today. Bob was a pioneer in Relief Well Intersects which took him to all parts of the world for many years. He coauthored numerous papers involving magnetic measurement and detection systems used in the oil and gas industry. He was also involved in two efforts to locate the burial site of the two Twin Sister cannons used in battles for Texas independence. Bob was pivotal in establishing the field Calibration Check (Roll Test), vital in establishing the accuracy of magnetometer/accelerometer based Directional Tools.

Bob was very great person to work for, always keeping the best interest of his employees and customers in mind. He was a classic gentleman that always expressed his love for his family.

Bench Tree is sad to announce that Robert (Bob) Waters passed away on Monday, October 14, 2019.

Bob was only here once a week, but many of us worked with/for him for more than 20 years. He was a classic and well known in the industry!

We will miss Bob as he was a friend to everyone at Bench Tree. We will relay any announcement in the coming week.

Over the past two months, our founder and president, Aubrey Holt, sales manager, Mitch Bancroft, and several of our engineers participated in two Drilling Innovation forums coordinated by the Darcy Partners. We had the pleasure to present our formation evaluation solutions to 32 representatives from 24 different E&P companies in Houston, and 30 attendees from 20 operators in Midland.

During the general presentations and then in subsequent one-on-ones, we had the opportunity to hear about the challenges and opportunities that operators are facing in basins throughout North America. Just a few takeaways include:

The importance of having accurate data is key to ensure they are in the right section of the sweet spot.

The need for regular calibration certificates is becoming more and more important.

Robust systems and sensors that can reliably perform in harsh environments are vital to reduce nonproductive and stay in the hole until TD.

Events such as these are great ways to showcase what makes Bench Tree different from others in the industry. Thank you to the organizers and participants. We look forward to continuing to develop technologies that help solve the industry’s challenges.
